Don’t Give up! Ethical Shopping Can Make a Difference

Behind the positive headline given by The Times to the latest IDG research into shoppers’ habits are some more worrying statistics. First of all, UK shoppers can give themselves a pat on the back for being the most ethically-minded consumers in the EU. However, while 41% of shoppers have made an ethical buying decision, there is a growing concern that buying ethically doesn’t really make a difference.

I think the examples of our suppliers shows how wrong this attitude is. Take Kazuri, whose beautiful beaded jewellery is handmade by a women’s group in Kenya. This group provides employment for 300 women who otherwise might struggle to find sustainable work. Yakanaka is providing vital employment to disadvantaged groups in Zimbabwe, who make their incredible, vibrant jewellery. Nkuku is a rapidly growing business whose fair trade and handmade albums, frames and jewellery help communities of artisans in India.

From an environmental point of view, our new journals from Coles are made from recycled leather, but look better than new! And our BoBelle bags are made using otherwise wasted eelskin leather from Asia. We also have a wide range of paper products, including those from Paper High, made from recycled cotton, which is discarded from the garment industry and makes the most incredibly soft, hardwearing paper.

These products make a real difference to the environment and the people who make them. And of course, they are unique, special and gorgeous. So you can buy with confidence and know you’ll be getting something truly important, in so many ways. Don’t give up! We are making a real, significant difference.
